The Braille Authority of North America (BANA) held its fall 2017 meeting November 2-4 at The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired, a BANA member organization, in Winnetka, Illinois.
During its three-day meeting, the BANA Board reviewed semiannual reports from its eighteen general and technical committees, each of which works on specific charges, and acted on committee recommendations. Portions of the Thursday and Friday meetings were dedicated to further development of BANA's strategic planning. In addition, the Board approved the application for full BANA membership of Texas' Region 4 Educational Service Center. Guy Toles was welcomed as the Board representative for new BANA member AMAC Accessibility Solutions and Research Center (AMAC), and Johanna Anand was welcomed as the new Board representative of Council of Schools and Services for the Blind (COSSB), a BANA associate member.
The Board established the 2018 budget and elected officers for 2018. The elected officers are:
- Chair: Jennifer Dunnam (National Federation of the Blind);
- Vice-chair: Sandra Ruconich (American Council of the Blind);
- Secretary: Dawn Gross (Alternate Text Production Center of the California Community Colleges);
- Treasurer: Jackie Sheridan (National Braille Press).
- Frances Mary D'Andrea serves as BANA's Immediate Past Chair.
BANA's spring 2018 meeting will take place at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel, 5855 West Century Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90045. The meeting will be hosted by Alternate Text Production Center of the California Community Colleges (ATPC), a BANA member organization, and will immediately precede the annual conference of the California Transcribers and Educators of the Visually Impaired (CTEBVI).
The mission of the Braille Authority of North America is to assure literacy for tactile readers through the standardization of braille and/or tactile graphics.
